Facts about the world's numbering plans
Computed from the 245 plans on file, not typed by hand; each figure has its table in the legend. The source for all of them is the ITU's register of national numbering plans and each plan itself.
Plans per world zone
The first digit of a country code is its ITU zone. Zone 2, Africa, has the most plans; zone 7 is two countries.
| 1 North America and the Caribbean | 25 |

| 2 Africa | 64 |
| 3 Europe | 36 |

Country codes shared by several territories
+1 serves 25 territories, each with its own area codes; from one to another the call is dialled like a national one.

How to get out: exit codes
Most plans use 00 to reach another country; the North American plan uses 011; a few list several codes and name a preferred one.
- 00 186 (76%)
- 011 26 (11%)
- 0011 3 (1%)
- another code 14 (6%)
- several codes 16 (7%)
- 245 plans
How to dial at home: trunk prefixes
A trunk prefix opens a national call and is dropped after the country code; many plans have none.
- trunk prefix 0 113 (46%)
- no trunk prefix 101 (41%)
- trunk prefix 1 26 (11%)
- trunk prefix 8 4 (2%)
- another prefix 1 (0%)
- 245 plans
How long a mobile number is
National digits, without the country code or the trunk prefix. A plan counts once per length it allows. The shortest mobile numbers on file are in Niue (4 digits), the longest in Austria (13).
| 4 digits | 2 |
|---|---|
| 5 digits | 7 |
| 6 digits | 12 |
| 7 digits | 41 |
| 8 digits | 71 |
| 9 digits | 99 |

Where a mobile number can move
In a plan with mobile number portability, a prefix says who a block was allocated to, not who serves a number today.
- listed 107 (44%)
- not listed 138 (56%)
- 245 plans
A few more
- The plan with the most carriers on record is the United States: 1,593 operators hold central office codes under +1.
- One plan lists no mobile class at all: Tristan da Cunha.
- 107 of 245 plans list mobile number portability; everywhere else the allocated carrier is normally the serving one.
